How to Grow False Shamrock

The false shamrock plant is a beautiful green and purple plant that originates from Brazil. Although it has large clover like leaves it isn’t in the clover family. False Shamrock also known as Oxalis triangularis is actually a rhizomatous wood sorrel plant. It spreads and grows through underground corms. Below you will find growing and care information on how to grow and care for your very own glade shamrock plant.

Sun – False Shamrocks need full shade to partial shade in order to grow.

Soil – They grow best in well draining soil such as loam or sandy soil.

Spacing – Space them 3-4inches/7-10cm apart when you first plant them.

Water – False shamrocks do not need a lot of water. It is best to fully soak them once they dry out almost completely.

Food – Fertilize once a year in the spring with a light liquid fertilizer.

Annual or Perennial – Oxalis Triangularis is a perennial plant that is evergreen in warmer climates. If you live in a cold climate as long as the corms are protected in the winter the plants will come back in the summer.

Climate/Hardiness – They can be cold hardy if they are well established and protected from frost and freezing weather.

Transplant – You can harvest False Shamrock once the flowers have bloomed and if they become over crowed. You can dig up the corms and separate them in order for the plants to have more room to spread out.

Tips – We have found with our False Shamrocks that they like to be in a shaded around that is surrounded by full sun. If they sit in full sun all day or even part of the day the wether and die. We also plant our False Shamrocks in cactus soil and high sand loams and they grow nest that way. Regular potting soil and garden soil retain to much water for them causing them to rot and die.
